A FROME FESTIVAL EVENT
Highly influential post-punk/indie band, The Monochrome Set are to play, at the Tree House. Loved by artists such as The Smiths, Franz Ferdinand and Blur and covered by such diverse acts as Iggy Pop and Tracey Thorn, this is a unique opportunity to see this legendary act at a small venue in Frome.
The band features original Monochrome Set members Bid (guitar/vocals) and Andy Warren (bass)
The Monochrome Set formed in 1978, and were heavily influential in the post-punk scene that evolved after the initial scorched earth of punk.
The band’s early releases were on the legendary Rough Trade Label before signing with Virgin offshoot Din Disc. They also released several albums on the Cherry Red label, making a notable appearance on that labels’ well known “Pillows and Prayers” compilation.
Though The Monochrome Set split in 1985 the next decade saw several reunions for both live gigs and further studio recordings. After a hiatus of over a decade the band reformed full time in 2010 and have since toured all over the UK, Europe, Japan and the USA, whilst also releasing eight new, critically acclaimed, studio albums.
Now in their 48th year, they are beginning a new series of gigs promoting their latest album and playing songs old and new.

Simon’s new band line-up features Billy Shinbone (Neville Staple band, The Sinclairs) on guitar and vocals, Joe Atkinson (Donovan, The Rhynes) on keyboards and vocals, Wayne Higgins (John Parish band, Radio Flyer) on bass guitar, and producer Ben Scott Turner (i-nichi, Evil Owl) on drum

The Monochrome Set are an indie rock band originating from Hornsey, London. They bands formation dates back to 1978 and ever since they have enjoyed a long and successful career. Their line-up has varied over the years arriving at their current line-up featuring original members. To date, they have released an impressive eleven studio albums, a number of EPs and demos. Their most recent studio full length was released in 2011, titled Super Plastic City. They accompanied this with a tour of the UK – both of which received a great deal of praise as people were clearly happy to see The Monochrome Set return with such strong material.

The thing about The Monochrome Set’s live performances is that they are more than just a live band. In the beginning, they collaborated with the experimental film maker Tony Pott who created a number of bizarre stage images using various film projections. They continue with their commitment to alternative, atmospheric shows which show how they are not only musicians but artists. Whilst their live shows have toned down recently, their musicianship shines through. They open with the low-key but familiar song ‘The Monochrome Set’ and blast through more upbeat tracks including ‘The Jet Set Junta’ and of course ‘Jacob’s Ladder’. The people who attend Monochrome Set shows tend to be age-old fans but they are also popular among new indie fans. It is perhaps their classic London vibe and distinctive talent on the bass and guitar that make them so special. Live shows are the place that their uniqueness and talent truly come to live. They have been a band for 26 years and I hope they carry on for a few more years yet!
