Southern Culture On the Skids, or otherwise known as SCOTS, is like the Grandad for Jake Bugg. Bob Dylan's brother and Clapton's cousin. This man is a pioneer for blues rock music. Any blues artist can learn a lot from such an old timer.
SCOTS songs have appeared in classic films like Duke of Hazards and Happy Gilmore. They write about their everyday lives, the classic rock and roll lifestyle: sex, drugs and southern fried chicken. Surely the best form of writing!
Their live sets have a gravitational pull whereby they pull you in no matter how back of the crowd you are. The steady grooving, sexy talking 'Camel Walk,' lingers around Jon Spencer Blues Explosion smell, as well as an upbeat Seasick Steve. 'Roadside Wreck' is more of a fast beat song that gets the people going as soon as the guitar chord is struck and 'the wet spot,' wel do I need to say anymore.
The beauty of it all is that the lead singer, Rick Miller, wears chinos and a straw hat and doesn't give a hoot about the critics, he just loves standing up there rocking out to his dirty country music. It's splendid and truly inspirational. Their music sounds like it should feature in Quentin Tarantino's next spaghetti western. One of the best blues bands going in this day and age.
