Formed in Florida in 1997 the band took its name from their high school days when ‘yellow cards’ were handed out for party fouling. The year they formed they released their debut album ‘Midget Tossing’ and then followed up 2 years later with ‘Where we stand’.
At this point however, after a bit of line up shifting, the band ended up with a fresh start and radically changed its sound from hardcore leaning, to a more melodic, pop punk sound. With this new start they were able to build up enough buzz to sign with Capitol records who, in 2003, released ‘Ocean Avenue’ which would go on to become the band’s finest achievement.
When it spawned hit singles like ‘Way Away’ and ‘Ocean Avenue’, the band’s popularity sky rocketed and before they knew it they were experiencing successes they never could have imagined. The album went platinum and soon enough the band were doing everything from headlining the Warped tour to picking up MTV awards.
With newfound fame, the band continued forward releasing albums until in 2008 they went on hiatus for personal reasons leaving fans heartbroken however they needn’t have worried as in just a couple of years they were back together releasing albums and continuing to tour. So while many may write off Yellowcard as just ‘that band with a violinist’, to their fans they are so much more and that’s what counts.
I've seen Good Charlotte over 100 times across the US, UK, Japan, and Canada. While some might consider that excessive, I can honestly say it was time well spent. GC shows are, above all else, a lot of fun.
You can expect to hear their hits, as well as a variety of songs from their five studio albums, though in recent years they've replaced early fan favorites, mostly from their self-titled album, with newer material. For the majority of concert goers attending a GC show, the entirety of the performance is spent dancing, singing, and jumping. So basically, for the most immersive experience, prepare to sweat.
Also you can expect to laugh. There is typically quite a bit of, what I like to refer to as, witty twin banter that takes place between brothers and frontmen Benji and Joel Madden. A Good Charlotte show is also a safe bet for families and younger fans, as there is usually little to no cursing or vulgarity.
Good Charlotte is currently on hiatus, but fear not, notable side projects from bassist Paul Thomas and drummer Dean Butterworth (The Strayed), Benji and Joel (The Madden Brothers), and, for the art fans, guitarist Billy Martin's comic book endeavor (Vitriol the Hunter) should keep fans of the talented quintet occupied for the time being.
If you are not currently a fan, I would suggest sampling each of the five releases: Good Charlotte, The Young and The Hopeless, The Chronicles of Life and Death, Good Morning Revival, and Cardiology, as they are all unique records and there is definitely something for everyone amongst their massive discography. In closing, to quote Benji "See you at the show!"
Yellowcard’s debut Ocean Avenue came out over 10 years ago! There’s a lot to catch up on but with them still making new music and being one of the best live bands, Yellowcard are a band you need to know about. ‘Ocean Avenue’ and ‘Light Up The Sky’ are probably the songs you are most likely to have heard of, although they may be from sometime ago. When the band got back together after a break of several years, new music was soon to follow with the fantastic ‘When You’re Through Thinking Say Yes’ and the newest album ‘Southern Air’ featuring one of my personal favourites: ‘Here I Am Alive’. They perform a great mix of songs, both old and new in each setlist and really bring the crowd alive, whether at a festival or at one of their headlining shows, leaving everyone smiling, wanting more and remembering why Yellowcard have been around for so long; it doesn’t get much better than this. Fans of Yellowcard come in all shapes and sizes, those who’ve been with them for 10 years and those introduced there and then, but all can come together and go crazy for a night of fun, thanks to these great guys from California and next time, we hope to see you there!
