Que Blessid Union of Souls, the alternative rock band from Ohio, United States who have been honing their craft for the last twenty years or so, securing recording contracts with EMI Records and V2 Records. They also met, being Ozzy Osbourne’s touring band. Tonight’s performance is going to showcase their career thus far, demonstrating the brilliance and complexity that is their music. They are due to perform songs from their six studio albums, snippets of all of them. They launch straight into “Let Me Be the One” the international hit that became an international hit in Canada and the UK as well as U.S.A. Their musicality knows no bound, with a high caliber being demonstrated on each instrument. “I Wanna Be There” sets the party off, with everyone in the audience waving their rock horns about to each syllable of the chorus, giving the band the energy that they need to get through this fantastic set. “Rev It Up (Nascar Rocks)” is probably one of the most rowdy crowds I think I’ve ever experienced.
If someone were to say 'classic American singer with a kickass attitude and honeyed voice', my instant response is Sophie B. Hawkins. Although Sophie has been doing fewer concerts in recent years, I was lucky enough to be in Los Angeles when she performed at Pershing Square in 2008, and let me tell you - Sophie's still got it. She's like a silent wildfire on stage. You can tell the composure and grace has come about as a result of her integrity and professionalism, but there's a huge passion for the power of music, and a certain humility that's both endearing and admirable. My personal favourite Sophie B Hawkins song is 'As I Lay Me Down', but during her performance of 'Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover', I could feel myself changing my mind completely.
There is something so different about seeing her live. You really begin to get a sense of the character behind the lyrics and the voice, and you see it's a human being that is so down-to-earth and grounded in everything she does, that you get drawn into the little bubble of Sophie B Hawkins love. Having recently seen her performing on the TV show Community, I immediately went on YouTube to find her greatest hits. Sophie is a musical free spirit, and there'll be no taming her, particularly in her years to come.
