Yo-Yo Ma joins the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) in Elgar’s Cello Concerto, a repertoire cornerstone that Ma has revisited in breathtakingly poignant performances throughout his career. Andris Nelsons also conducts the orchestra in Richard Strauss’s grand symphonic tone poem Eine Alpensinfonie, in which an eventful Alpine mountain ascent is depicted across 22 continuous musical sections. Theirs has been called a “superb account,” combining Nelson’s thoughtful interpretation and the BSO’s “sheer sonic splendor” into a “deeply satisfying performance [that is] difficult to resist” (Gramophone).
