Weinberg Quartet # 8, Lavenda “Elegies”, and Beethoven Op. 130

What remains when beauty is placed under pressure?

Axiom Quartet’s second concert of Eternally Modern explores music that sings through fracture, memory, and emotional intensity. Weinberg’s compact Eighth Quartet continues naturally from Axiom’s recent complete Shostakovich cycle, offering a concentrated world of lyricism, tension, and survival. Houston composer Richard Lavenda’s Elegies brings that emotional focus into the present, moving between solemn chorale, anger, quotation, and fragile consolation.

The evening culminates in Beethoven’s Op. 130, one of the strangest and most moving works in the quartet repertoire. Its famous Cavatina stands at the emotional center of the program: a song of extraordinary vulnerability that seems to continue after words have failed. Axiom will perform Op. 130 with Beethoven’s replacement finale, while the quartet’s original ending, the Grosse Fuge, will return as the final destination of the season in June.

The evening includes brief verbal context from the quartet, complimentary wine, and a 15-minute intermission. Business casual attire is suggested. The full concert experience will last approximately 90 minutes.
