July 17th 1717, Thames, London: A king is planning a little boat trip. What better way to entertain him during this river procession than with music? Then, he commissioned one of the best composers of the time, who had recently taken up residence in his kingdom, to write three suites. An orchestra boarded another boat to accompany the royal procession. It was a complete success, and the king asked the musicians to play the work again and again.
