The Royal Albert hall is a beautiful Victorian concert hall and arts space in Knightsbridge, open since 1871. The hall hosts classical concerts, rock and pop, opera, awards ceremonies and other events throughout the year. Events are hosted in the unique, distinctive Grade I listed building located in the borough of Westminster. Wrapping around the outside of the hall is a mosaic frieze, illustrating "The Triumph of Arts and Sciences". The hall was originally to be called 'The Central Hall of Arts and Sciences', but when Prince Albert died during the construction, Queen Victoria chose to dedicate the hall to him. Queen Victoria herself was the first to lay a stone in the construction of the building. At the opening ceremony the Queen was too overcome to speak and Edward, Prince of Wales, had to declare the hall's opening on her behalf. In recent years the hall has undergone some subtle redevelopments, restoring and preparing for future use. The grand organ was rebuilt in 2002, 131 years since the original was built. The organ now has 9,999 pipes and is the second largest in Britain. Royal Albert Hall has hosted the Proms annually since 1941, when they had to be re-located from Queen's Hall, which was destroyed by bombs in the Second World War. The venue has hosted many notable concerts and events, welcoming artists from Petula Clark to ABBA to the stage.
