Black Cat is a 200/700 person capacity club, welcoming some of the finest independent acts to the stage. The venue is easily accessible, close to U St/African-Amer Civil War Memorial/Cardozo on the Washington Metro. The club was opened in 1993 by Dante Ferrando, who felt there was a lack of quality venues for independent music in Washington. Since the opening Black Cat has hosted many notable artists, including Sufjan Stevens, Elliott Smith, Dinosaur Jr. and many more. There are two music spaces at Black Cat; the Main Hall, which has a 700 person capacity, and the Backstage, which is downstairs and has an intimate 200 person capacity. Shows at the Black Cat are all ages. Food is available on site at the Food For Thought restaurant, serving fine vegan, vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. There is an additional bar downstairs called The Red Room, which has no cover charge.
